Bitcoin vs Ethereum: Key Differences Explained
Bitcoin and Ethereum are consistently the two largest cryptocurrencies by market value, and newcomers often assume they're essentially the same type of asset with different names. They're actually built for quite different purposes.
What Bitcoin Was Designed For
Bitcoin was created as a peer-to-peer digital currency — a way to send and store value without relying on a bank or central authority. Its design deliberately prioritizes simplicity and security over flexibility, with a fixed supply cap of 21 million coins that reinforces its narrative as a store of value, often compared to digital gold.
What Ethereum Was Designed For
Ethereum launched a few years after Bitcoin with a broader ambition: to be a programmable platform, not just a currency. It introduced "smart contracts" — self-executing pieces of code that run on the blockchain — which allow developers to build applications directly on top of Ethereum, from decentralized finance platforms to digital collectibles.
Currency vs Platform
A helpful way to think about the difference: Bitcoin is primarily designed to function as money. Ethereum is designed to function more like a global, decentralized computer, with its native currency (Ether) used to pay for computing power on that network.
Differences in How They're Secured
Both networks rely on large groups of participants to validate transactions, but they've historically used different mechanisms to do so. Bitcoin uses a system called proof of work, which relies on computational effort. Ethereum shifted from proof of work to a system called proof of stake, which relies on participants locking up capital rather than computing power to help secure the network.
Which One Is "Better"?
This isn't really the right question — they're built to serve different purposes. Bitcoin's strength lies in its simplicity, security track record, and fixed supply. Ethereum's strength lies in its flexibility and the vast ecosystem of applications built on top of it. Many investors and developers view them as complementary rather than competing.
